Project “Steering Behavior” realised in C++ with Unreal engine 4 (2015)

Seek: Go to a fixed target by adjusting the direction of velocity.

Green arrow: Desired velocity.
Red arrow: Current velocity.
Yellow circle: stationary target.

Arrival: Same behavior as Seek by reducing velocity based on distance from the target.

Flee: Flee a fixed target in the opposite direction.

Pursuit: Going to a moving target. Linear prediction of the target’s position.

Purple square: Mobile target.
Yellow arrow: Direction of the target.
Yellow Circle: Prediction of the future position of the target.

Evasion: Fleeing a moving target to the opposite of the future predicted position.

Offset Pursuit: Dynamically calculates a position at distance X of the target.

Obstacle Avoidance: Projects a cylinder in front of the character and modifies its trajectory according to obstacles in collision with the cylinder.

My work on this project:

3C – Camera :

Third person camera: Free rotation around an axis (The player can’t modify the inclinaison of the camera).

Fixed camera: Triggered by a box, the fixed camera can show the inside of a restricted area while the player can’t modify the rotation.

3C – Controller :

Player can moves in the joystick direction relative to the camera.

3C – Character :

Player can crouch.

Player can climb obstacles from a certain height while in a climbing trigger.

Targeting system :

Player can target a nearby object or enemy and change the target by tilting the right joystick to the left or right.

The player automatically targets the nearest object or enemy, enemies are targeted in priority.

Usable objects:

Some elements of the decor can be used with the slingshot:

– Locks: Unlock access to an area.

– Bottles: Attracts the attention of enemies.

– The enemies: They are stunned for a few seconds then goes into alert mode.

– Saw Traps: Saw traps are activated when the player, an enemy, or a sling shot ammo touches their trigger activation (represented by a rope).

Sound and visual detection of enemies:

Player makes more or less noise depending on his speed (crouching, walking or running), if an enemy hear or see the player in front of him he targets him.

Pick-up :

Several pickups can be found, they glow when the player is at a certain distance. When the player is close enough to bring it, an icon appears above the object:

– Food crate (Reward).

– Notes (Reward).

– Slingshot ammo.

– Armor (Allow to cash a shot).

Control Lucky (The dog) :

Player can make actions with the dog, each action consumes energy:

– Heel / don’t move:

Player can ask Lucky to follow him or stay where it is.

– Fetches:

Lucky walks toward the targeted mound of dirt and digs up a bone (energy boost).

– Attack !:

Lucky attack the targeted enemy.

– Bark !:

Lucky barks and attracts all the enemies in range.

Slingshot :

Player can throw stone with his slingshot.
